Spring Beauty - with a conscience

It's hard to imagine Spring when your weather app shows "feels like 5" outside. Really Chicago!? Well with Spring around the corner, I'm desperate to give my makeup a serious makeover.

To save some time and money, I decided to ask my good friend and makeup artist Angie, to help narrow down a few (affordable) natural cosmetic brands and products mother earth would approve of. Checkout Angie's blog contribution below and see what she recommends.

Have a great day, stay warm, and happy shopping! :)

In the past “natural makeup” was synonymous with poor coverage, chalky consistency, and overall lack of pigment. Thankfully in the last five years a few brands have stepped up to the challenge of producing beautiful cosmetics with a natural and organic slant. I have picked two of my personal favorite beauty lines that fit the bill and worth the price!

Founded by Maureen Kelly, Tarte is a brand which is not only cruelty and paraben free; they also use post consumer recycled materials in their packaging. Their ingredients are sourced from carefully vetted labs and farms with an effort on leaving a green footprint in their wake. Now let’s get down the fun part! These are some of my go-to Tarte products.

Featuring clay that is sourced from the banks of the Amazon RIver. The blush comes in an amazing array of beautiful shades that work for all skin tones. My personal favorites are Tipsy (a fun coral color that looks great on light and dark skin) and Exposed(the perfect nude/rose flush for everyday). They are touted to have a 12 hour wear and even work well on those with an oily complexion.

Anyone who thinks you can’t achieve full, glamorous lashes with a natural mascara has not tried this product! I am cursed with short, light eyelashes and this formula not only gives volume but length as well.  It contains olive ester (basically olive oil) to condition and strengthen.

Perhaps the best known organic beauty maven is former model turned eco-warrior Josie Maran. Josie Maran is not only a smart business woman, she is also a socially and environmentally conscious mother. All of her products are cruelty, synthetic, fragrance, and waste free. She only sources from ethical means and uses female driven workforces whenever possible. Maran is best known for her Argan Oil products and they are some of the best in the industry.

This foundation uses pure, organic Argan Oil along with a color match system that molds itself to each individual user. The serum gives beautifully sheer coverage, while moisturizing the skin and blurring fine lines and producing an amazing glow. This is a great two-in-one product which is made to be worn year round.

While not a makeup product, these wipes are an absolute necessity for anyone who lives an on the go lifestyle. These wipes are all natural with cucumber, vitamin E, and aloe vera. They gently and completely wipe away all traces of makeup and oil, while not stripping the skin. They come in an easy to stash packet and are perfect for your yoga or work bag. As an added bonus a portion of every sale of these wipes go to the Natural Defense Council’s effort to protect the Polar Bear population!

These are just a sampling of some of the great products available to the socially conscious beauty junkie. I urge you to visit and to learn more. Both of these brands are available at Ulta and Sephora as well as online. As a consumer and makeup artist, I want to know what is in the makeup I use on myself and my clients. We can all make the choice to use products that are ethically sourced and chosen to leave the least amount of impact on the environment. But let’s be honest, at the end of the day we just want something that makes us look as good as we feel and nothing feels better than taking care of ourselves and the world in which we live. - Angie Warren
